Chevrolet grows sales and share in 14 European markets in the first three quarters

  • European January-September sales up 10.0 percent, Q3-Sales up 14%
  • January-September European market share up at 2.5 percent, Q3 share up at 2.7%
  • Extraordinary sales growth in Uzbekistan, Spain, Denmark, Turkey, Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria and Sweden
  • Chevrolet in fourth place in European mini segment with new Spark

Zurich. Chevrolet Europe sold 351,308* cars from January to September, an increase of 31,847 cars, or 10.0 percent, compared to the year earlier period (2009: 319,461 cars). Chevrolet's European market share was up by 0.24 point at 2.5 percent, based on share gains in 14 European countries. In Q3, Chevrolet sold 117,961 cars, representing a share of 2.7 percent. In September, Chevrolet sold 44,539 cars, for a share of 2.6 of the European market and an increase of 20 percent compared to 2009.

"Chevrolet’s Q3 sales are 14 percent up on the year-earlier period, a clear sign that our new line-up of great-looking mini, small and compact cars is making an impact," said Wayne Brannon, head of Chevrolet's European operations. "In 2011, we will be launching seven new models and expanding our portfolio to cover new market segments," Brannon added.

Chevrolet enjoyed particularly strong sales growth in Uzbekistan, Spain, Denmark, Turkey, Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria and Sweden. All of these ten markets registered triple- or double-digit sales growth. (See table on page 2)

In Russia, where the market is slowly recovering, Chevrolet held its position as the number one non-domestic brand, with a market share of 6 percent for the first nine months. In Q3, Chevrolet sales in Russia improved 30 percent compared to the year earlier period.

With the new Chevrolet Spark city car, Chevrolet increased its share of the mini segment from 5.9 to 7.4 percent in Europe and became the 4th best-selling brand in this segment in Europe, with sales of 94,144 cars.

Within the compact car notch-back segment, the Chevrolet Cruze, which was AUTOBEST Car of the Year 2010 and has a 5-star EuroNCAP safety rating, continues to be the market leader in many countries, with segment shares of up to 35%, for example in Spain, where 5,420 Cruze were sold from January-September this year.
