Vehicle Overview
Fact file: Chevrolet Aveo sedan
Dynamic small car with family appeal
- Segment: Small
- In the model range since: Summer 2011
The Aveo sedan offers a fresh, youthful exterior, sporty handling characteristics and a stylish passenger cabin that is uncommon to the segment. It is expected to appeal to young families in particular.
Under the hood, too, Aveo offers value for money, refinement, and above all, impressive fuel economy. Its redesigned engine line-up comprises three petrol and a diesel engine. A 1.2L gasoline unit is available in two displacements rated at 70 and 86 hp, whereas the 1.4L and the 1.6L motor deliver 100 and 115 hp, respectively. The Aveo is the first small Chevrolet in Europe to be fitted with a 1.3L diesel engine, which will come with Start/Stop technology, a high-performance common-rail fuel injection system and advanced, electronically controlled variable geometry turbocharger (with intercooler).
When fitted with the 75 hp variant of the 1.3L turbo-diesel, the Aveo is currently Europe's most economical sedan, with a consumption of 3.7 liters/100 km. The Aveo is also the first small Chevrolet to sport a six-speed automatic transmission. Manual transmissions are of 5- or 6-speed, depending on engine choice.
The Aveo has been carefully tuned to suit European driving tastes. Its tight body-frame integral structure (BFI), a McPherson strut front suspension and a semi-independent rear suspension have been engineered to provide dynamic handling. More than 50 percent of the vehicle's structure are of advanced steels with significantly greater tensile strengths than those seen in the predecessor offering. Available Electronic Power Steering (EPS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill-Start Assist (HSA) and an anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with integrated Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), all of which are standard, further enhance the vehicle's responsive ride performance.
In line with its sporty disposition, the sedan projects a purposeful, assertive look. The large dual port grille immediately communicates it as a Chevrolet. Along with the centerline crease on the slightly swept hood surface, the exposed, motor-cycle inspired headlamps are another key feature that mark its distinctive front appearance. The sedan's rising shoulder line suggests a mature, upscale presence reminiscent of that of its larger cousin, the Cruze notchback. Another design cue setting the sedan apart from the hatchback are its tail lamps that are carried in a dual element lens.
The interior features craftsmanship incorporates Chevrolet's traditional dual cockpit. Carefully selected surfaces, textures and a detailed instrument cluster with Chevrolet ice-blue ambient backlighting exude a stylish, progressive aura. The entire front cabin is enveloped in a wrap-around fascia that flows from the dash into the driver's and front passenger's doors.
Aveo customers will appreciate the quality materials used in the interior as well as multiple storage spaces in the center stack and a trunk volume of generous 502 liters. It also has two gloveboxes, the second one of which is located in the mid-instrument panel and has outlets for USB and auxiliary devices for discreet connectivity of various electronic appliances. All devices can be operated through the steering wheel controls or radio interfaces and Bluetooth functionality.
A brand-new infotainment system, called Chevrolet MyLink, will be launched in the Aveo, as of summer 2012. Chevrolet MyLink aggregates content from smartphones onto the seven-inch diagonal, high-resolution, full-color touch-screen display. Compatible devices can be connected via USB or Bluetooth. There is also a dedicated plug-in outlet for certain personal music devices and smartphones that do not use USB or Bluetooth connections.
Once the smartphone is connected, personal playlists, photo galleries, phone books, videos and other stored media and data, such as a special navigation app, can be accessed though the touch-screen. The seven-inch color-touch-screen infotainment system is produced by LG Electronics.
The Aveo hatchback and sedan were awarded a five-star rating by Euro NCAP, the European New Car Assessment Program. The Aveo is currently the safest car in its segment.
