Rüsselsheim. Deliveries of the Opel Ampera electric vehicle have begun and are going to plan. The first Opel Ampera electric cars with revolutionary range-extending capability have been given to customers. Orders are approaching 6,000 in Europe. The top markets in terms of orders include Benelux, Germany and the United Kingdom.
“Our first deliveries are running smoothly and I’m pleased to confirm that our sales target of 10,000 units for 2012 is on track,” says Enno Fuchs, Opel’s e-mobility launch director.
“We’re very happy that our European customers can now drive our revolutionary Ampera.”
Not only has the Ampera won a strong following among customers but it has also gained a lot of accolades and praise from industry experts, the media and even competitors. It has won some 30 prizes and is among the finalists of this year’s “Car of the Year” award. It was also recently awarded the maximum of five Euro-NCAP stars for safety.
Premium brand conquest
The majority of Ampera retail customers previously owned top premium brand cars and are making the switch to the Ampera and Opel because they want to be the first to use such cutting-edge technology. In doing so, they are part of the revolution in electric mobility where Opel has taken a leading role.
So far the majority of Ampera clients are fleet or business customers. Fleet clients are typically big leasing companies that have already ordered a number of Amperas to be included in their car plan. These include big names such as Lease Plan, ALD and Europcar. A number of big global brands have placed orders and further showcase their environmental commitment by having Amperas in their fleet.
Revolutionary technology
The wheels of the Ampera are electrically driven at all times. A 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack feeds an advanced 111 kW/150 hp electric drive unit to deliver between 40 and 80 km of pure electric operation with zero emissions – depending on the terrain, driving technique and temperature – when fully charged. Whenever the battery has reached its minimum state of charge, the gasoline engine automatically turns on and powers a generator to feed the electric drive unit. This extends driving range to over 500 km without the need to stop at a filling station. On the road, the Ampera’s Voltec electric propulsion system provides instant torque of 370 Nm enabling zero to 100 km/h acceleration in around nine seconds and a top speed of 161 km/h.
Thanks to the Ampera’s intelligent and practical extended-range capability, drivers enjoy peace of mind because they will never be left stranded by the roadside with a depleted battery.
